For all my real N.E.RD. enthusiasts, the group really hasn’t gone anywhere. Pharrell has become a personality that 1) doesn’t age 2) is ubiquitous 3) has developed into one of the best features to have on a record. Pharrell is the friendly vampire that has invaded our headspace with “Happy” and the Daft Punk infused “Get Lucky”. Chad Hugo, although not a fan of the limelight, has stayed busy producing and writing for the past few years. His hands have been active with Earl Sweatshirt, Red Velvet, and No Malice. Shay has been keeping under the radar as usual, but that’s what we love about him. Actually, N.E.R.D. dropped three songs for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Yep, SpongeBob. But, their last album was Nothing, released in 2010 to generally favorable reviews, with Hypnotize U the chart topping single. And for the first time in almost exactly seven years, we have a new single – Lemon.
Now N.E.R.D. has been notoriously one of the best groups to handle features, and this is no different. Lemon is a straight up banger that is what this brisk weather asked for. Oh, did we mention it features the illustrious Rihanna? It’s crazy how they just picked up from where they left off and went straight for the industry’s jugular AGAIN. I love how over the years Pharrell has honed his already impeccable singing and the production from Chad and Shay is as seamless as ever.
Videos are generally lost on people nowadays, but every once in a while we get a truly exceptional visual representation. N.E.R.D. decided to give us some high key visuals thanks to Todd Tourso and Scott Cudmore. The video starts with Rihanna shaving dancer Mette Towley’s hair off in a shady hotel room. Then we jump into a dark indoor flea market where Mette gives an incredibly inspired dance to the bumping audio. Whoa.
With N.E.R.D. headlining Complexcon this coming weekend, we can only hope that they are back and here to stay. Seriously, I don’t think we can lose them again.
Check out the song below and if you’re in the area make a point to see them this weekend.
