First of all, I agree with this man.

Tim Robbins, the Oscar-winning actor and star of The Shawshank Redemption, has expressed deep concerns about the future of cinema. Speaking in an interview with The Guardian while promoting the second season of Silo, Robbins criticized the increasing reliance on algorithms in the entertainment industry, arguing that they prioritize formulaic content over creativity.

“You go on Netflix right now, you see what films are coming out, and you tell me that that’s the future of cinema? We’re in big trouble,” Robbins said, addressing the dominance of streaming platforms in recent years.

To illustrate his point, Robbins cited The Shawshank Redemption, a film initially overlooked by audiences during its theatrical release. Despite receiving strong reviews and multiple Academy Award nominations, the movie only gained widespread acclaim years later through VHS and repeated airings on Turner Classic Movies. “We’re at 30 years now [on from] Shawshank Redemption. It is a beloved movie. It remains on top of IMDb as the most favored movie of all time,” he noted.

Robbins emphasized the enduring power of quality storytelling, explaining that while initial success might seem important, a film’s real value lies in its longevity. “A quality movie or television show will last. Whether it’s a hit or not is irrelevant compared to what people are going to think about it in 10, 15, 20 years,” he said, underscoring the need for filmmakers to prioritize timeless art over fleeting trends.
