Refinery29’s community, Unbothered, specifically designed for and by Black individuals, will mark its fifth anniversary with a captivating event in New York, celebrating the media brand’s remarkable growth, diversification, and progress. Established in 2017, Unbothered honors the beauty, strength, and intricacy of the Black community by producing significant, relevant content that offers a secure environment for young Black individuals to be acknowledged and understood. Initiated by Refinery29’s Black staff, Unbothered has evolved from a dedicated Instagram channel into a global multi-platform brand, encompassing digital content on Refinery29, a regular newsletter, the viral Dear, Black Love video series, the award-winning Go Off, Sis podcast, and experiential elements such as The Glow Up.
The Glow Up, Unbothered’s first-ever live ticketed event held in Atlanta over Juneteenth weekend this year, brought the brand to life and expanded its influence in the experiential realm, both in-person and virtually. In 2022, Unbothered introduced Wash Day, an award-winning virtual event celebrating the collective experience of Black women’s hair care. Owing to the success of its community-building events and extensive engagement, Unbothered was recognized as the “Most Engaged Community” by Digiday this year and has become Refinery29’s fastest-growing and most engaged channel.
